Cosmo: Overcoming Neglect and Finding Light Again

Published on December 6, 2025 at 6:15 PM

Cosmo arrived to us just a month ago — a little over a year old and already thrown away into a world far too cruel for such a young soul. This home-bred Standardbred gelding had every reason to shut down, yet even through all he had endured, there was still a softness in his eyes. A quiet plea for kindness. A spark of hope.

He stepped off the trailer in the middle of the night, trembling so hard he could barely stand. Underweight, exhausted, and terrified, he faced an unknown destination in the dark. I often think about what must have been going through his mind. Would there be food here? Would anyone show him gentleness? Would he finally have a warm place to rest his head? The fear he carried was overwhelming — but so was his courage.

We guided him into a warm stall, gently placed a blanket over his frail body, and let him settle in. It was 2 a.m., but sleep wasn’t in the cards for me that night. I watched the cameras over and over, wanting to be sure he was still with us, still breathing, still fighting.

When morning came, Cosmo didn’t even have the strength to stand for breakfast. I went into his stall quietly, unbuckled his blanket, and helped position his legs beneath him. I spoke to him softly, telling him he was safe now… that it was okay to rest… that his weary little body no longer had to struggle alone. I placed a pile of alfalfa in front of him, and he began to munch. After a few minutes — almost as if gathering the courage to trust — he finally stood. That moment felt like a turning point for him… and for us.

The next four weeks became all about healing. We began his refeeding program slowly: alfalfa and unlimited hay to build strength. Yes, some may not agree with our approach — but it works for us, and our horses are monitored closely with multiple vital checks a day. After a week, we introduced Nutrena Mare & Foal, then gradually senior feed and supplements. And let me tell you… Cosmo LOVES his food. His eyes light up at every meal like it’s the best part of his day.

He met the vet and farrier soon after. He was unsure at first, but once he realized we were helping him, he relaxed and tried his very best to please. That’s just who he is — gentle, willing, and full of heart.

Today, Cosmo still has about 100 pounds left to gain, but the progress he’s made already is incredible. The trembling, hopeless colt who arrived in the night is now seeking out snuggles, leaning into affection, and greeting us with newfound confidence.

We can’t wait to see this sweet boy finish his rehab, grow stronger, and eventually find the loving forever home he has always deserved. Cosmo’s past may have been filled with neglect, but his future is nothing but bright.
